Japanese wood joints
Long time reader, first time blogger. I thought that because we are discussing wood joints that I would show you all wood joints on steroids. Japanese wood joinery can be very elaborate and complex in its geometry. They are like puzzles and require a great deal of skill and craftsmanship to create. Some of these are ultra complex but elegant. I have to admit though, that even I question why make it so complex... and thats saying a lot coming from me; but the answer is clear: because someone can!

George Nakashima is a Japanese American, who was famous for his woodwork. George grew up having strong ties to his Japanese culture which would greatly spark his interest in the study and characteristics of Japanese woodwork. Nakashima graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelors of Architecutre and later a Masters from MIT. Nakashima started to travel the world which would greatly open his views on woodwork and influence the type of style that he would use. From Paris to Japan, Nakashimas travels opened his eyes to various types of woodwork giving him a diverse view on wood design. Later, George would be employed for an American architect named Antonin Raymond but most of his focus and studies were in Japanese architect.
In 1937, the architect company was hired to build a dorm in India, where Nakashima was the major consultant. In India, Nakashima was able to learn more about East Indian woodwork and helped open his view on woodwork even more. After his work in India, Nakashima believed in removing ones ego from woodwork and instead devoting his creative process religiously, which is the opposite to the majority of Western culture. Nakashima received much praise from his work in India and was given the Sanskrit name "sundarananda" which meant, one who delights in beauty.
During World War II, Nakashima moved back to America and was placed in a Japanese internment camp, where he met Gentaro Hikogawa, who was trained in traditional Japanese woodwork. Throughout his time with Hikogawa, Nakashima learned to use traditional Japanese tools and designs. After being released from the internment camp, Nakashima settled down in Pennsylvania, where he would set up his own woodwork shop and studio. Nakashima produced many pieces for various clients including the furniture line Knoll. Through his work, George became internationally known working for private homes, churches, and corporate buildings.
Through his work, Nakashima aims for perfection like most Japanese woodwork. Nakashima is famous for having large finished tables with natural unfinished edges connected with butterfly joints. The butterfly joints were strong joints and helped him greatly because of his natural unfinished wood pieces. Nakashima saw more beauty in the natural unfinished pieces than the mainstream pieces with perfect edges and glossy finishes. Nakashima also liked to used natural oils on the table instead of the regular hard finish because he liked to show the natural grain of the wood. Some of his famous pieces besides the natural unfinished pieces include the Mira Chair (named after his daughter) and the Conoid chair which was supported by two blade like feet. The Mira Chair was originally designed for his daughter, but Nakashima expanded on the pieces and soon became a popular chair with a high and low style of the chair. This practice of working with both unfinished and finished pieces gave the idea of equality among wood pieces no matter what they looked lie. This idea seemed to reflect off Nakashima telling people that they should not judge on the outside appearance but appreciate a piece/person no matter what. Because of Nakashimas idea and style of work, his natural unfinished pieces were much more popular and desirable than his mainstream woodwork.
After Nakashims death, his daughter would oversee the woodshops that he left behind. Nakashima left behind a legacy in his unique work that is still today greatly appreciated by many woodowkr enthusiasts and architects. Nakashima is greatly remembered for his natural, rough, knotted, unifished edges on his pieces and set a style that would become uniquely popular among people. One of Nakashimas woodshop, which is located in Japan, has become a musem that holds many of his pieces.

I sort of messed up when I ordered the hardware because, as you can see, the doors to slide back all the way. When I was ordering them, it was not clear to how much travel they would have, but I got sign off from the boss (wife) that it was fine the way it is.
So, that is all I wanted to get done today, so mission accomplished. I still need to clean the glue from the doors and sand them down a bit. Im in the home stretch though! All I need to do now is mill up all of the shelving, rout the profiles into the top and bottom, add the feet and apply the finish. Here are a couple more shots of the front with the two side swing out doors set into place.

His projects are always interesting. I love his combination of methods, sometimes using heirloom techniques and jointery, other times exploring simplicity and focusing on end results. In nearly all of my woodworking projects, there are curves that can make or break the design. These are almost always curves without a constant radius, so I am relying on what looks "right" to my eye.
Acu Arc flexible curves are my favorite tools for laying out curves. They are available from Highland Hardware in 24", 48", and 72" lengths, and from Lee Valley in 18" and 36" lengths. French curves from an art store in regular sizes, and from Woodhaven in giant sizes, are also helpful for sections of curves.
I generally do not like flexible rules or laths because it is awkward or impossible to control the contour in mid-curve. The curve is regulated by the endpoints and maybe an intermediary point, but then is passively subject to the material properties of the layout device which may not produce the desired contour. I rarely use trammel points or a compass.
To design curves in a project, such as for table legs, I refine sketches into scale drawings. Then I make a full size mock-up by transferring the key dimensions onto scrap wood and use these to lay out a smooth curve. I saw the curve and refine it with rasps, spokeshaves, and planes. When it looks right and feels right, it is right! Then I go back and modify the scale drawings as needed.
For curves applied to multiple parts, and most of them are, such as with table legs, I next make a template by transferring the key dimensions of the final scale drawing onto quarter-inch MDF and use these to lay out the final curve. MDF works better than plywood, solid wood, or cardboard since it holds a clean edge and there is no grain to distract my eye or misdirect tools.
The Acu Arc has a natural tendency to produce a curve without bumps as you shape it. Hold it on the wood, trace only a nearby section of the curve with a pencil, hold it further along, trace more, and so forth. It is made of translucent colorless plastic but I would prefer opaque plastic that would show the curve better against the background of the wood.
Saw the template curve, then clean it up with rasps and sandpaper. Now you are on your own with your eyes and hands as you "fair the curve." Looking down the curve, as shown in the photo, is a remarkably sensitive way to see bumps and lumps that must be eliminated. Gently running your hand along the curve, like a sleigh ride over the hills, is also a very good way to sense irregularities. The edges of the template should be square if it will be used on both faces, as for legs with curves in three dimensions, or as a template for router work.
I position the finished template onto a squared-up blank of the project wood, clamp or double-stick tape it if needed, and draw the layout lines for each leg. With thinner stock, such as a table top or apron, the template may serve as a guide for pattern routing.
